STOKES VALLEY WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

On a perfect summer clay members of the Stokes Valley Women's Institute met to celebrate, in the form of a social afternoon, the ninth anniversary of the institute. The guests of honour were Miss A. Kane (Dominion president), Mrs. Heatlicote (president Hutt Valley Federation of Women's Institutes) and members of the executive. Representatives from Upper Hutt, Trentliam, Silverstream, Taita, o-mata, Newlands, Pioneer Club, and the Alicetown Women's Club were also present to tender their congratulations. Mrs. 0. Hurney presided, assisted by Mrs. E. Kay (secretary), and Mrs. G. Melrose (treasurer). The meeting was characterised by a delightfully friendly atmosphere, and a programme of musical items was received with warm appreciation. Those who contributed were Mrs. Dawson (songs), and a playreading, in costume given by Mesdaines Kay, Huse, Simon, Melrose, and Bathurst. Mrs. Huse, on behalf of the members, presented Mrs. Hurney with a beautiful posy, and delightful sprays were also presented to the official guests. The committee, with Mrs. C. O'Shea (convener), were hostesses to a delicious home-made afternoon tea, a feature of which was the birthday cake. This was made and iced by Mrs. Summers. Opportunity was taken to bid farewell to Mrs. Huse, who is leaving shortly to attend the conference of Associated Countrywomen of the World. The winners of. the competitions were: Best bloom, Mrs. Freeman; best shortbread, Mrs. Thompson.
