ARE SMART CLOTHES NECESSARY
TO A WOMAN'S HAPPINESS? Is it wise 'or foolish for a girl to invest the largest part of her income in a smart wardrobe'} Are pretty clothes, stylish hats and the care of an expert beauty operator as important to a woman's happiness as money in the bank? ' Danielle -Darrieux, (pronounced Dare You) who is considered the most sensational European- screen find since Marlene Dietrich, and who is the posessor of a beautiful figure and wears clothes to excellent advantage, asserts that, without pretty clothes no girl can be truly happy. "It isn't extravagance" she insists. "Fashionable clothes are necessary to a woman's happiness as food and suni»ht. Even if a girl wo'rksi hard for a living, and has to make s-acriiices in order to have lovely gowns hats, and shoes and regular care in beauty salons, it's an investment in self-con-fidence and poise, without which two assets 110 woman can ever hope' to attain success, either in business or socially. ' "Women in the home," she continues, "should be as careful in choosing their wardrobe as busines girls who must maintain a smart appearance. Don't relax after marriage and think that any old thing will do. Your husband was important enough to you before you said, 'I Will' to make you take the utmost care with your choice in clothes. It does not follow, just because you have taken part in the necessary Nuptials, that you are secure for life in his admiration. Take an interest in yourself and dress in a way that will emphasise your claims to beauty if you want to hold your man. "We weTe discussing fashions on the set of the New Universal's 'The Eage of Paris' which will be the first American production in which I have appeared, and my leading man disagreed with my ideas. 'Oh, no' lie said, 'If a girl is neat and tidy and is able to carry on a lively conversation about
current topics of interest to men, she'li have no worry about getting all the invitations she can And time to keep. Personality and charm, rather than clothes, count highest.' But, of course, Ido not agree. A girl may have a marvellous personality, but if she appears anywhere dowdily dressed, she will not have a chance o.f displaying her charm of manner, for the simple reason, that men,, although they refuse to admit it, would not bo sufficiently attracted by her appearance to give her an opportunity of proving her natural attractions were* adequate without clothes. Personality is a wonderful asset in any woman but it nevertheless needs correctly chosen and smart Crocking to enhance it, before it will gain the attention and admiration. of the male of the species." "I am sure that hundreds of women will agree with me" concludes M'lle Darrieux, "that pretty clothes have much -to do with a girl's happiness. Women must be charmingly dressed. It is necessary ■to their peace of mind.'' Danielle Darrieux, who has been the darling of the French stage and screen for years, is well known for " the new and unusual ideas she has introduced to the world of fashion. She .does not favour the bizarre or extreme,, but concentrates on simple designs, achieving always with distinctive accessories a note, so chie as to distinguish her immediately in a world of well-dressed women. In her firs't picture "The Eage of Paris," the New Universal will give her every opportunity to make a first and lasting impression upon her intro-' duction to motion picture audiences all over the world. A feature of the film will be the genuine Parisian settings that will enable it to exude the true continental spirit and the gay atmosphere of the French, capital in which M'lle DaTrieux will be the central figure of interest.
