MAYOR TAKES FIRM ACTION

The Finance Committee of the' Borough Council on Monday night reported that up to and including the final discount day £40,501 had been collected as against £34,125 for the same period of the previous year. Allowing for an increase in the Tates of approximately ten per cent., this shows an improvement of approximately £3,000 on last year's figures. Cr. Horlor asked for the amount of rates that had been collected from the Housing Department. Mr. Andrews said that' as no valuations had yet been received from the valuation department, no demands had been sent out. If Cr. Horlor had given notice of his question before the meeting he could have been supplied with the whole of the information. Cr. Horlor said that the reason he was asking for the information was that he was convinced that during the political addresses much would be said about the rates on Government houses. Mr. .Andrews took exception to the remark and requested Cr. Horlor to resume his scat. Ho said that speaking without the full information before him he did not think "the amount collected last year amounted to £90, but he would be pleased if Cr. Horlor woum keep politics out of the Council Chamber. Heatedly Or. Horlor said he had had about enough of it, he .had. been used to a chairman who would allow a free discussion. "Have . I any right to speak in this Chamber or not?" said Cr. Horlor. • ' ] Mr. Andrews: "You will not be allowed t 0 enter into political speeches." Cr. Horlor said his object in raising the question was that 'the borough should not be discredited on the political platform. He did not want people to think because there is a housing scheme in the borough the district was at a disadvantage. A motion to procede with the business closed the discussion, the Mayor stating that Cr. Horlor could have the information next morning on applying to the Town Clerk.
