TROTTING

(By "Unhoppled")

Southern Chief is ill' Wild work at, Addington and lOoka, in.perfect condition to jltldefrgd .Hi successful assault on the big motfey during the coming season. J. tJwKinnerly hftß handled Southern ChiW"*with the utmost patience/ and, a good stayer, will be heard Of;as soon as thei tracks harden- up; 1&6 long-sighted \ training policy taken-Mth this good: pair should bear trait in the very near future. Drumcru, who fitltolied second to Battleaxe at WashdWte last Saturday, is a six-year-old 1 by Man o' War from a Great Audobon. mare. This was only his seconds face, his first! effort resulting in a fcttird at Westport earlier in the fflOHtb. Both performances, were full of merit and point to the possibility tlfat Drumcru will be an early winner at one of the smaller meetings. Stamboul, the young full-brother to Wr&cker, was paraded for ; the Washdyke Trot at Timaru last Saturday. He damaged his sulky during the preliminary and as there was no spare sulky available he..was withdrawn from the' race and investments made on his were ruturned..

The Washdyke Trot at.Timaru resulted in the little-fancie 1 division gaining the places. Wee Truman made the early pace fro:a Tinker, Marfax, Drumcru and Joa i Grattan', and there was little change in the leaders over the first mile, ♦lth the bunch In close attendance. At the straight entrance Will Truman , was still in charge but Drumcru mdde a fast run into the lead at the distance and appeared to have the race in hand until Battlevale came through on the fence. An exciting struggle over the last bit resulted in Battlevale winning by half a length from Drumcru with Myrna Loy> a creditable third in front of Tinker and Mongolian. • It has been decided to allow Gamble a light season at the stud and the son of Jack Potts and Prince Ann will not be seen in a race until later in the season. At one time, it was thought that Gamble would not race again, but his trainer, W. B. Edwards, now considers that there is nothing seriously wrong with the chestnut pacer. Gamble is an upstanding pacer, beautifully proportioned, and looks full of masculinity. His sire and dam are both American bred, and there is no reason why Gamble should not follow in the steps of his famous sire as a getter of the best class of pacer.

Although at times t: e popular local owners of Frisco Lady and Frisco Boy received disappointments during the season, Messrs. J. BAugust and H. L. August must b considered to have had a successful year with their young pacers. Their winnings during the year exceed £2000, quite a respectable total when it is taken into consideration that not a great deal of travelling from headquarters was done. Both these pacers are still young and

there is every expectation that they will do still better during the coming season, Frisco Boy especially has built up into a customer, and he is at home over all distances. He looks likely to reach top company during the season. M. B. Edwards should have a very good season in front of him. Zincali and Twenty Grand should more than pay their way. Philario impresses as a very Solid pacer, with a resolute finish over two miles. He should turn out an excellent proposition for the stable. War Buoy has not been raced for some time but his spell has done him good and he may run all the better for it. Being a Man o' War, he is partial to heavy tracks. Others in the stable are the trotter Princess Beverley. Thor, Francisco, Superjack (a three-year-old by Travis Axworthy), and some promising two-year-olds.
