GOVERNMENT HOUSES

Work is progressing on fiu sites of the 280 on which it is proposed to erectState houses at Lower Hutt. All the frames are standing and the roofs pitched on 27 houses. A further 18 have Hie frames standing but have no roofs. The balance are in the foundation stages. A start lias been made in setting out the next block of 20 to be started in the Trafalgar Street area. There arc I*l contracts in all for Lower Hutt, four of which have been started. There are 45 houses in the course of erection in the Malioe Street, Knight's Road and Bush Street area, four each in Oxford and Cambridge Terraces and Cressy Street, six in Hardy Street, ami three in Waiwhetu Road. Workmen engaged include 90 carpenters, 14 bricklayers an! 20 labourers. In addition there are sub-contractors' workmen, such as plumbers, painters and gasfitters, who bring the total employed on the Lower Hutt scheme to 150.
