After looking ever the senior eleven selected for the ' first match and takkig into account r the fact that one certainty, Patrick, was not available for the first game, the selectors must be given credit ior ' having done a good job of work. I", 1 is apparent that much thought was 1 given to the selection with the result 1 that the team is excepionally strong in fielding, solid in batting and fairly well equipped with bowlers. The inclusion .of Patrick, a stock bowler and a good ' batsman, will strengthen the team still 1 further. That Stehr regained his place is not suprising after his batting on Saturday. Like most Auckland players he did not strike form in his first sea--1 son, the pace of the wickets here being entirely different from those encountered in the north. Clark is an all rounder who has an impressive record in Hawke Cup matches and Hamilton club cricket. Lawton is the ex-Alid-land. player who has registered some good scores against Hutt teams in past seasons. His aggressive style of batting and brilliant work in the outfield no doubt weighed heavily in his favour I when the team was selected. Capstick is an ex-Hutt Valley and Waitaki High School boy. While attending the latter he represented North Otago. When on term holidays last year lie played in the local Mercantile League where his devastating, bowling (he averaged eight wickets a match) gained him representative honours, He is a slow bowler able to turn the ball both ways and is also a stylish batsman and a smart field. He i.s the same age as Kemp, 18, so has many years of cricket ahead of him, F. Judd's familiar ligure will 'be missed by iplayers and supporters. Although appearing at. practice the veteran bowler Ernie Judd indicated to the selectors that he desired to be considered for selection only if the committee thought his services were still essential to the team. He did not desire to stand ia the way of younger players and his action stamps him as one having the true cricketing sporting spirit. Judd Jjas for many years beem a stalwart of the club, with a string of magnificent bowiing feats to his credit. Probably no bowler in Wellington has been made to work so strenuously during the 'past five years. The success of the Hutt Club in the past has been based upon the club spirit of it's members a<nd the action of this veteran is a continuation of the maxim | that a player's first duty is to his team. • Present members will no doubt place on record the valuable services that Judd has renderedSome very capable players must have missed selection by a narrow margin. Chief of these were Brosuahan, an 1 opening bat from Canterbury, McCarthy fro,m Petone, and R. Gwilliam. The .former has been asked to take over the second eleven and has been given charge of all the players likely to challenge the members of the first eleven for their places. It can be taken for granted that the players-in the first eleveit must produce the goods if they are to retain their positions, Kyle and Williams are two new members who , will bear watching, The former is a ■left handed bat and a right hand slow bowler. Williams is a good bat and , right hand slow bowler. The Junior A team looks to be very strong including . as it does several very good all round- ( ers including the veteran B. Pegler. , The Junior 8.2. team lias been filled , up with promising young players in- , eluding four good bowlers in Kilminster, Rudman Sullivan and R. Muir. Some of these youngsters have only to strike form to earn promotion. A closc watch will ibe kept on their activities. A meeting of all senior and second , grade players will be held in the Pavilion on Thursday evening at (i p.m. . | Players making the trip to Master- ; ' ton on Labour Day are requested to , I note that the bus will leave from the ] J National Bank at 7.30 a.m. The teams < will be posted up in the dressing-room . this week. • The Club invites all vice-presidents ; along to afternoon tea on Saturday , next (October 24), the opening flay. ;
