A DELIGHTFUL CONCERT.

THE CIVIC BAND MAKES TJJS DEBUT In conjunction with the Hutt .Valley Liedertafel under the baton of Mr. 'Harry Brusey, the new municipal, or Civic Band, under the couductorship of Mr, H. I, Simpson, made its first public appearance at an after-church concert in the King George Theatre on Sunday evening of last week in aid of the Children's Health campaign. Miss Zell O'Kane was the vocal soloist and rendered several delightful numbers for which she was recalled.

The performance of the band left little to be desired and met with the warmest approval of the audience. The attack and release and the well delincd harmony, reflected the greatest credit on those responsible for training a bail 1 of musicians to such a state of perfection in less than three mouths. The new uniforms are extremely smart and lent a business-like air to the performers that should uphold the dignity if the borough's official baud,

The concert was opened by the band who gave delightful renderings of the march "Dawn of Freedom," and -he hymn "Nearer My God to Thee" and for a recall the hymn "Deep Harmony," Several other numbers were equally well rendered by the band during the evening, particularly the "Poei and feasant" overture.

Tin 1 Liedertufel were also very high1y appreciated iu live numbers consisting of "Border Ballad," "Come Shepherd .Swains," "The Old Wonnn," "Old .Mother Hubbard," the final lumber being the chorus from "The Three Musketeers" with drum and piauo accompaniment. Bandsman E, lE. Simpson gave a saxophone solo "'Silver Threads" with band accompaniment and for an encore Schubert's "Serenade,'' ' Miss Zell O'Kanc whose aceomwaniments were played by Mrs V. O'Kanv, sang a number of delightful airs including two Irish songs for which shewas recalled. Bandsman' J. Bagnall's cornet <010 "The Roserv" was warmly appreciated for which he bowed his acknowledgments. ' 'Mr. A, J, Gearing, the secretary t.f the Health Camp campaign briefly thanked the audience and the performers on behalf of the committee .nd said that- the local efforts ha<l realised about £100, The concert concluded with '.he march "The Challenge" and the National Anthem rendered by the bund.

GIFT EVENING. —* —- A delightful gift evening was tendered to Miss Clare Goodman whose marriage to Mr. Joseph Silver-Dc-Simas taHes place shortly. Nearly fifty guests assembled at the residence of her nunt Mrs Eadford and'her cousin Mrs. Sulli'van. Competitions of a varied and utfvel nature were held, being won by Miss Nola Goodman, Mr. T. Hartley, Mrs. Elliott and Mr. E. Hartley. Community singing and dancing kept the fathering in a happy mood. Splendid 'music was supplied by the Hartley Trio. Great interest was shown when Miss Goodman opened her parcels, assisted by Mr. DeiSimus. A dainty homemade supper was served. The health of the bride was proposed by her uncle, Captain Eadford. 1 Miss Goodman looked very dainty in 'pink floral georgette, Mrs Eadford wore black satin, Mrs Sullivan scarlet windswept satin ,and Mrs. Goodman black marocain. The guests included Mr. and Mrs. *Vass, Mr and Mrs Ireland, Mr and Mrs McAlister, Mr and Mrs Mill;?, Mr 'and Mrs H. Hartley, Mr and Mrs T, Hartley, Mr and Mrs Elliott, Mrs. Dempster, Misses N. Goodman, B. 'Crigbton, A. Harris, A. O'Brien, J. Irelaitl, L. Hartley, >1. .Sullivan, J. Sullivan Messrs Sullivan, K. Eadford, de .Simas, Coleman, Skinner, E. Hartley, Blake, Walse, Bright, Shrank, H. Ireland, Captain Eadford and others.
