" COLOURFUL DISPLAY. r Although the entries in many classes were not as numerous as last year, owing l to the unfavourable weather, thero were many beautiful specimens to bo seen- at the H.V. Horticultural Society's Spring Show in the King George Theatre on Wednesday and Thursday last. The show was officially opened by the Minister of Lands, Hon. Sir Alfred Ransom, who was introduced by the president of the society, Mr D. S. Patrick. In addition ,to the Minister those in the official party were the Mayor (Mr J. W. Andrews), Mr Walter Nash, M.P., Mrs Knox Gilmer, president of the Horticultural Society, Mrs Norman Gibbons, Mr. H. Poole and the secretary, Mr A. J. Nieholls. At the conclusion of the show on Thursday evening, the trophies were presented by the president, and the flowers donated were sold by auction for tho benefit of the new hall fund, by Mr W. H. Leighton, and a very satisfactory mini was realised. Included in the sale was a handsome donation of a wonderful collection of polyanthus in potpS, grown by Mr Eric Riddiford, of Orongoronjg'o. Every pot found a ready introducing the Minister, Mr. Patrick said that it was a great help when public men took an interest in tho work the society was doing, as it gave them encouragement to go on with their work. He regretted the show was not quite as good as usual, although thore were some really wonderful blooms to be seen, particularly in the open classes. "I Avant particularly to congratulate Mr N. B. Gibbons," said Air Patrick, "on tho wonderful exhibit of cinerarias, also Mr Riddfurd for the wonderful show of polyanthus. Congratulations were also extended to Mrs G. A. Chapman for a magnificent collection of cinerarias. - . "I am pleased to have tho opportunity of being associated with you at the opening of the show," said Sir Alfred Hansom, who expressed his pleasure able to stand on the platform at Lower Hutt, whore ho was born. Sir Alfred said ho felt that those associated with the show should pay particular attention to the children's classes. "Try to create in the child a love of flowers, which I regard as an elevating factor in the lives of everyone," he said. * Reference to legislation put through to prevent destruction of plant life was made by the Minister, who said the Government was trying to protect the beauty spots throughout the Dominion, Apar.t from the blooms for competition, which comprise a wide variety of spring flowers, Mr N.
