The Hutt News Wednesday, September 25, 1935. HUTT VALLEY ENTERPRISE.
All roads next week shouu lead to the King George Thcati* as the scene of tne tirst ilutt \ alley Industrial Exhibition. The reception accorded by the commercial community of the Valley to the initiative of the Lower Hutt Chamber of Commerce 111 this pioneering 1 venture already bespeaks an encouraging reward for their enterprise. It is largely through functions of this nature that the general public is kept conversant with the progress that is being made in all branches of industry in the Dominion. The local public will here have a unique opportunity of seeing whal goes 011 within our own boundaries. Offering natural advantages unsurpassed, and probably unequal led in any other part of the coun try for the operation of indus tries, the Hutt V alley has for I 011;. been not only the industrial een tre of the Wellington district but also a leading industrial are: of the country. Year by yea the range of local manufacture has steadily increased; and in or ganising a collective demonstni tion of what has been accomplish ed in this direction, the Exhibi tion Executive has set itself task which should prove of coi: siderable service not only to coir mercial and industrial interest but to the community as a wholf
To the further credit of the executive is the fact that 110 attempt has been made to confine within parochial boundaries the scope of the exhibition. Although essentially the product of Lower Hutt endeavour, the display is intended, as its name implies, to be as representative as possible of industrial activity of the Hutt Valley as a whole. However much ill-conceived notions of parochial autonomy may militate against the rational in local government, nothing can dispute the unity of the Hutt Valley in the commercial sense. Industrially the future of all areas of the V alley lies along one road, irrespective of what local prejudices may make of its future politically. In seeking to give a perspective not of any particular area but of the district broadly, the Exhibition Executive is actuated by a wise motive.
In addition to what the exhibition may accomplish towards advertising the commercial possibilities of the Valley and encouraging development, a further immediately useful purpose it may serve is to bring into closer touch the maunl'acting, selling and purchasing sections of the public within our own boundaries, If it did this alone the effort would have been well justified, Tlw fact should be urged that only by co-operation between the buying and the selling sections of the community can the common interest best be served. No one section can live unto ilsclf. Each is equally necessary to the other. To purchase unnecessarily outside
the district is to prevent the circulation of money locally, accentuate unemployment, stultify the service local traders are able to give, and increase local taxation by reducing the number who are able to meet it. To purchase unnecessarily outside the district, even should a small immediate advantage be apparent, is but poor economy. If next week's 'boost' of local industries serves to make local residents more 'locally conscious', those business men responsible for the arduous duty of organising the event will doubly merit the congratulations of the immunity. ,
