HIGHER RATE RECEIPTS

A statement presented to Ihe Hutt River Board last week l>y the secretary (Mr. A. J. Gearing) allows a decided increase in receipts fur the Jive months ended August 31, 1!'35, .is against the similar period of lust year. The following are the figures. last year's appearing in parentheses: Kate*, (£7li»/<j/t>) > royalties, £321 12/(5 (£348/13/2); rents, £471/1 (>/«> (£3BO/10/10); sales, £11/5/- (£3/7/6); sundries, £(52/7/(5. (£33/11/11). The expenditure is also heavier, the total being £3311/1(5/3 (£23(52/9/-). The iiifTfuse, however, includes an election— £175/15/7—which did not take place the previous year, and a heavy expenditure for piles which will not recur during 1 the year, also other nonrecurring items. The estimated expenditure for the whole year is £(5830. ' The stall' is at present engaged in preparing the current year's rate notices, which, it is expected, will be issued this week. The rates have been substantially reduced. The following report was presented by the engineer (Mr. H, Sladden): — "A 1 ltlie river works are in a satisfactory condition. There have been several freshes bill no damage of moment. The willow and cable work protect ion 'has been completed at Routley s and at the Belmont shingle plant, and at both of these 'places the river conditions have improved. Further willow protection at the erosion at August s has been constructed and the situation is quite satisfactory. fc>topbank lnainteiuuice and gorse clearing have been attended to."
