Y.M.C.A. LADIES' AUXILIARY.
COIN AFTERNOON. The Ladies' Auxiliary ol' the Hutt Valley Y.M.C.A. recently inaugurated, bold a coin at'ternon in the Orange Hall, Pet one, in aid of the Y.M.C.A. funds. In spite of the inclement weather the hall was well filled with ladies in sympathy with the movement, and the takings were satisfactory. Mrs W. Nash and Mrs. J. W. Andrews (vice president), received the guests, and Mrs. 11. W. Kersley (honorary president) presided over the ■gathering. Mrs Kersley in an interesting address, traced the circumstances that led up to the establishment of the Y.M.C.A. in the hall in Cu'ba Street. At the close of the war in .1918 the New Zealand soldiers then in Germany, received a cash contribution from tlio canteen funds. The soldiers wanted something done with the money to commemorate the work done at the front by the Y.M.C.A. They contributed to the fund themselves and trustees were appointed to give effect to the wishes of the soldiers. As the sum in hand was not sufficient to carry out the intentions of the soldiers it was decided to invest it. In 1933 the fund had reached a good sum, and the Y.M.C.A. convention decided th,at the time was opportune to build. As the soldiers had been trained in Trcntham, the Na- » tional Council of the Y.M.C.A. had decided that the area most suitable was the Hutt Valley. A section had been secured in Cuba (Street and a building erected on it which had been opened last November by Lord Bledisloe, the then Governor-General. The Y.M.C.A. in the Hutt Valley was a memorial hut, the speaker continued, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the institution had accepted a trust that they would honour from the soldiers who appreciated the work of the Y.M.C.A. on the lighting front. They stand not only to assist in the finances of the movement hut also for the gracious influence of the women in the work of the Y.M.C.A. Mt Kdwavds (general secretary of the Y.M.C.A) spoke on various aspects the wfft'k, and expressed appreciation of the help and interest given by the ladies, Apologies for their inability to be present were received from Mesdames Ashford, Chartrcs, Lopdell, Witcher, Scholefield, Bourne, and Burgess senr. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies and a very interesting programme was provided by the following:—Mrs Aitcheson, violin solo; Mrs Dick, vocal solo; Mrs Lowe, recitation; Mrs. Schmidt, and Mrs Look, vocai duet; Mrs Burgess, solo; Mrs Look, solo; Miss Judy Lewis, recitation. The accompaniments were played by Mrs J. W. Andrews and. Mrs. C. A. Fuller.
