IN SOUND POSITION HE VIEW Of FINANCES The financial position of the Petone and Lower llutt Gas Lighting Board disclosed by the profit and loss account which was considered by the board at its last meeting is commented upon in a statement issued by the board. "Notwithstanding a slight falling-off in gas sales," reads the statement, "the results of the year's operations indicate that the board has never been in a sounder position. The reduction in gas sales is simply the result of economy by gas users, the number of whom, it is | satisfactory to note, is larger than a j year ago. _ I "Sales of residuals show a decided increase over last year, while the net profits on a comparative basis are up by £759/10/7. A further satisfactory point is that the to'ni cost, both manufacture and distribution, is less per 1000 cubic feet than last -year." Mr W. G. Lodder presided at the meeting, and there were also present Messrs E, T. E. Hogg, C. P. Brockel-

bank, A. Mcholefield, D. Campbell, W. (I. Meldrum, and iS. Clcndon. The board recently donated a gas cooker to the Jlutt Technical College, and a letter was received from the Std 6 cooking class of the Eastern Ilutt School, expressing appreciation of' the increased facilities. The works managers, Mr C. Shaw, reported that during the month 9,319,000 cubic t'eet of gas was manufactured. This was a decrease over the corresponding month of the previous year of oil,ooo cubic feet, and a decrease over the previous month of 753,000 cubic feet. The average make per ton of coal was 15,713 cubic feet and the average calorific value was mB. Tli. U's. Coal carbonised amounted to 592 tons and at May 1 there were 1026 tons in stock. The estimated cokc in stock was 173 tons and the estimated tar was 15,274 gallons. The secretary and distribution officer Mi-. O. Milbery, reported that during the month there were eight new services, seven new cookers, four cookers renewed, three coppers, one caliphont, one waterheater, 11 new meters installed, 65 meters changed, and 1M meters repaired -at the works.
