BELMONT PROGRESSIVE ASSOCIATION.

The annual meeting of the above Association was held recently in the local 'Churchroom, Mr B. Urwin presiding. Owing to the bad weather tlje attendance was very poor. The chairman read the report covering the activities of the committee during the past year. The footpath between Given Street and the Station had been patched and if it had not been for the uncertainty as to the ilgnal positon when the road ,s widened, cha- County Council would have tar scaled this path. The question of electric power has occupied the attention of the Hutt Valley Associations during the year with the result that some concessions have been obtained. Lists have been circulated around the district for signatures for a branch school at Belmont for children . up to the first standard, after which it is proposed to let the children go in the train as at present. It is no doubt the idea of small children having to go in the train to Lower Hutt on their own that has been the means of preventing many prospective residents from coming to live at Belmont, The committee also dealt with the question of the smell from a locil industry. We are sorry to say the membership, and consequently the subscriptions, have not been very satisfactory during the past year. The committee would like to see more interes 1 ; taken in the affairs of their district by supporting the Belmont Progressive Association in advancing the progress of Belmont. During the past year two members rsignd from she committee. The attendances of members during the term have ben well up to the average. The meeting placed on record its appreciation of the work of the Hutt County Council representative, Mr W. V. Dyer, who has always been ready to do all he can for the advancement of the district. The question of the fund which rhe Association held in trust for a public hall, was discussed and it was decided to call a committee meeting to deal with the matter and then hold a public meeting on Thursday 10th May in order to elect a new committee, and also to receive the recommendations as :o what should be done regarding the public hall fund. i
