CROQUET OPENING.

PETONE CENTRAL CLUB

The opening o£ the season of the Petone Central Croquet Club was held yesterday afternoon. The Mayor of Petone (Mr. D. McKenzie) performed the opening ceremony in. the presence of a large attendance. Apologies for absence were received from Mrs Austin, president of the Wellington Croquet Association, and Mrs Earl McKenzie, secretary of the Wellington Association.

The club's president, Mrs M. Sharpe, welcomed visiting croquet players, and hoped they would have a pleasant afternoon. Bouquets were presented to Mrs McKenzie, mayoress, Mrs Sharpe, Mrs R. C. Kirk and Mrs Kelly.

Mr McKenzie referred to croquet as "that game of games," and with summertime and lengthening evenings all would be able to play it to their heart's content. The spirit- of the game countedj said Mr McKenzie, and the friendships formed in sport. He complimented the club on the state of its greens, and said that whoever was responsible for, the . greens deserved congratulations for the way in which they fitted in with the surroundings, but lie thought some flowers round the greens would set them off.

Mrs McKenzie hit the first ball through the hoop, thus opening the season. Afternoon tea was served.
