PARK COMMITTEE
The quarterly meeting of the Hutt Park Committee was held last week. There were present Messrs W. Gh Meldrum (chairman), B. W. Toomath, W. Wilson and C. H. Andrews.
The thanks of the committee were expressed to the Petone, Lower Hutt, and Eastbourne Borough Councils for contributions on a pro rata population basis which enabled the cmmittee to pay current rates due. The thanks- of the committee were also expressed to the Hutt Eiver Board and the Lower Hutt Borough Council for agreeing to remit arrears of rates.*
The Hutt Valley Lawn Tennis SubAssociation inquired if the committee had any ground available for the laying down of courts to serve as a. lawn tennis centre for the valley. Mr. Toomath said he toped the .committee would give the request serious consideration, as tennis was increasing in popularity, and it would be possible ior the park to become an important tennis centre. The park had been planned with a view to the provision of courts in the north-western corner. Mr. Wilson agreed with the views of Mr. Toomath, and said he would like to see an arrangement made whereby courts would be planned to provide for tennis for thirty years ahead.
It was decided to ask the association ;to confer with the executive of the committee as a preliminary to further negotiations.
A reply was received from the Wellington .TitoUiftg Club denying that the club Lhad committed a breach ef its lease by .allowing an .outside club to bold a trotting meeting on the park.
,TJie lease,provides-;that for the first two trotting meetjngs .held each year the club .shall be charged £75 each, but that subsequent meetings shall bo at tho rate of £25.
