TROTTING.
METHVEN^ MEETING. For so early in the season the success attained by young pacers was a feature of the Metliven Trotting Club's meeting. Four-year-olds in Great Min+o, i Tempest. Eaclaim /and Eureka Boy ac- ( counted for half the programme, while the three placed horses in the Cup were { filled by horses of this age. The most pleasing" feature, however, was the exceptional form of the placed horses ~n the first division of the Mt. Harding Handicap. These three horses have just had their third birthday and judging by the form shown of late by three-year- • olds, the classics will not be confined to* duels between Taxpayer and Indianapolis, for in Rey Direct, Tollgate, Golden Cross, Golden Direct and Nobleman, there is going to be stern opposition. Most of the horses mentioned have shown gameness in their races and especially does this apply to Tollgate who shows the fighting qualities of his sir?, Great Bingen. ' WAR OFFICER COSTLY. War Officer has shown a lot of spei'd on the tracks and in. some of his earilei races he lias reproduced his track form.' But of late he has pioved a costly proposition to his admirers. He shtmfc waywardness at the start of his recent i races and evidently he has had enough ] for the time being. A spell would perhaps sweeten him up and the sooner this course is decided upon, the sooner his backers will be relieved of entrusting their money to an unreliable proposition. NEW ZEALAND TROTTING CUP. With the .appearance* of the handicaps for the New Zealand Trotting Cup, interest in the race intensifies, and discussions are rife as to the qualifications and the preparations candidates are undergoing. The trainers of the competitors have their charges in racing trim and they only require a little fast work to bring them to their best. When the Cup Trial Handicap at Hutt Park is decided, a definite opinion of form will be forthcoming. However, enthusiasts are early discussing the form of their favourites and of the field, Bed Shadow, Harold Logan, Rqllo, Kingcraft, Royal Silk j and Free Advice have their firm adhcr-
ents. J. Byrce has his two charges,
I Royal Silk and Bed Shadow looking a . | picture. Bed Shadow shows appreciable j improvement since he won a double at ' the August meeting at Addington. and i Royal Silk appears to have regained I the form he disclosed in the N.Z. Gold | Cup at Wellington last January. Harold , Logan is still Dominion champion, and 1 the world's record he established for one and a quarter miles^ on grass at New Brighton last Saturday lends weight to the opinion that he njay win the Cap Trial at Wellington this month, and also the N.Z. Cup at. Addington early next month. Kingcraft is bright sad happy and appears to' be regaining his form of a few years ago. He Js to join D. Withers' stable shortly where Begu] Voyage is also undergoing a special preparation. She is also pleasing herHrainer on the tracks. Tomkinson is giving Free Advice judicious work and tl«e mare will lack nothing on the score of condition. 80110 is another fit horse and Berry is giving his charge plenty of barrier practise. He recently went along over a mile and a half at Addington in 3.19 3-5, the first mile taking 2.15. Carmel is in Donald's good care and he always turns out his charge, in perfect trim. So far Kohara is standing up to his work in gratifying manner. He recently recorded 3.20 for a mile und a half well within himself Glenrossie *s reported to.be hitting out with his accustomed dash at Hutt Park and Terence Dillon is satisfying his trainer nt Oamaru. At the present juncture Harold Logan's recent record has installed * him favourite from Bed Shadow with Kollo and Free Advice popular fancies. AUTO MACHINE WELL. Auto Machine is in perfect racing condition and his admirers are eagerly awaiting his next appearance. He is n. grand pacer and if he goes to Oamaru his presence there should add interest to the proceedings.
