RED CROSS SOCIETY.

At a recent meeting of the local branch of the Red Cross Society, the ■hon. secretary;:reported-iba* very generous contributions of clothing had been received and without this loyal support it would not be possible for the society to continue its valuable work. The society acknowledges with feelings of gratitude the work of the noble band of ladies who assemble weekly for the purpose of not only making new garments out of old, but useful articles of clothing for many mothers and their young families from new material. The material for this purpose has to be purchased from the slender finances of the local branch. Although many cash donations are receive^ from time to time, these are not sufficient to meet the many calls made' each week to relieve necessitous cases. It is for this reason that several entertainments have been arranged for the near future. Since its inception, the local Red Cross Society has worked in conjunction with the Mayor's Relief Committee and has been able to render practical assistance to many distressed families according to their need. The local branch adheres to the high ideals set by the great Red Cross Society all over 'the world and is ever ready to assist wherever required in any emergency. In her concluding remarks, the secretary appealed to all householders who were at the present time clearing out their wardrobes and cupiboards in the process of Spring Cleaning, to remember the Red Cross Society who would find many uses for the articles of discarded clothing usually found on such occasions. Men's clothes are especially in demand and anything in the way of boots, shoes, or bedding will be thankfully received. Anjr parcels will be called for on request, either to the "Hutt News" office, or phones 63-799 or 63-947. - '■

The secretary gratefully acknowledges gifts from the following:—Mesdames Gardner, Martin, Grey, Kay, Hollis, Dodds.
