In order to assist the funds of the Free Kindergarten, a plain and fancy dress dance will be held in the Moera Hall on Saturday evening next. It ishoped that all those who have the interests of the children at heart will make an effort to attend.
Those desirous of obtaining real bargains in second-hand clothing will have an opportunity to do so by attending the Jumble Sale in Wesley Hiall on Friday evening, 14th inst. The Sale opens at 7.30 p.m. Be early!
By the courtesy of the Principal of the Hutt Valley High School, the concert given on the 4th inst, will be repeated in the King George Theatre on Thursday, 2Qth October. We would strongly advise those who were unable to 'be present on the last occasion to be sure and attend the next performance and thereby assist a very worthy object, ie., the Mayor's Relief Fund to which the proceeds of the concert are to be donated.
At Monday's Council meeting it was reported that "the boy who "had been taken from the High School to fill a (position in the Council*s office, had proved to be very satisfactory and had been successful in securing a permanent position. Councillors were very pleased with the success of the scheme and decided to ask Mr Kidson to supply another boy on the same terms.
A very enjoyable afternoon was spent on Tuesday when Mrs Vagg en« tertained members and friends of Waimarie Croquet Club at her residence, Bellevue Road. The hostess, wearing a black georgette frock, was assisted by Mrs Williams wearing embossed floral chenille. Bridge and "500" were played, the winners being: Bridge, Mrs Salt; Hidden N,umber,MrsOrr;''soo" Mrs August senr 1, Mrs A. Y. Lees 2. Messrs H. Ernest Leighton, Ltd., Estate Agents, report that two of the three Petone houses advertised at prices £375, £450, and £475. in the columns of the "Hutt News" havealready been sold. It is further reported that enquiry for houses for rent has increased tremendously.
At Monday'B Council meeting, Cr. Wilson drew attention lo a notice which had appeared warning trespassers from doing damage to the sections being cultivated by the unemployed asked that the council's staff should asssit in the attempt to prevent damage being done. The Mayor said he thought the warning would bo quite sufficient. He was very thankful that there had been so few complaints of vandalism. Other councillors instanced cases where gardens were made on the roadside and were unmolested.
At a meeting of the local Ministers' Association held on Monday morning it was unanimously decided to conduct a combined service of Divine Worship in King George Theatre on Sunday evening, 13th November.
As a result of being knocked down by a motor-cycle in Cuba Street, Potone at 8.15 a-nn on Monday, Doris Nelson, a scholar, who lives at 46 Bristol Square, suffered a fractured ■)«
forearm and abrasions to her face. After receiving medical attention she was removed to the hospital by the Free Ambulance.
