JOE E. BROWN in
"LOCAL BOY MAKES GOOD."
Joe E. Brown is in this town again, lovable, old, wide-mouthed Joe will delight audiences at this theatre finally to-day at 2.30 and 8 p.m. with the kind of exaggerated comedy that set you guffawing at his other pictures. In "Local Boy Makes Good". Joe E. Brown, plays the part of one John Miller, a timid near-sighted clerk in tho book store of a college town —a man outwardly interested in botany and inwardly occupied with contemplation of the fair sex., Others in the cast are Dorothy Lee as John's inspiration, Both Hall as her girl friend, Edward Woods as rival for Dorothy, Wade Boteler as coach, and Edward J. Nugent as a sprinter of ability. " Local Boy Makes Good" is a comedy drama of outstanding merit. THURSDAY and FRIDAY at 8 pan. LIONEL BARRYMORE and KARiEN MORIiEY in THE WASHINGTON MASQUERADE Lionel Rarrymore co-starred with delightful Karen Morley makes another appearance on Thursday and Friday, 13th and 14th October in "Washington Masquerade." Barryanore plays a middle West Senator who becomes a senatorial leader and national power. Unable to reach him any other way, the lobbyists try a woman, employed to charm recalcitrant legislators. The Senator falls in love with her, marries her, sacrifices his career and resigns at, her behest. After he plays traitor to his party, he discovers the trick that has been played on him. How he battles. it out before the Senate, tearing down the structure of political manipulation in a final sensational victory forms a powerful climax. Karen Morley scores as the political vamp, married to Barryimore. Nils Asther is skilful as the sau-ve foreign affairs manipulator. SATURDAY at 2.30 and 8 .m MONDAY at 8 p.ta. '' THE SENTIMENTAL BLOKE. '' When the makers of the "Sentimental Bloke" essayed the task of picturjping the Australian vernacular verse of C. J. Dennis, they tackled a different jab. A great proportion of the value of "The Sentimental Bloke" as Dennis wrote it, is its literary value and this could not well be preserved in talking picture dialogue, therefore the makers of the picture have in various places thrown on to- the screen verses and couplets from the original. There remains, over and above the literary value, the value of the story itself, and this they have translated in rather free terms, with a fair measure of comedy, and.at the same time with a determined effort to retain the charm of the true-heanted factory girl and the genuine ring in the love of her exlarrikin lover. And, on the whole, a difficult task has been accomplished not i badly. Certainly, if comparisons are permissible, this film story of Doreen, The Bloke, Ginger Mi<jk, also the mother and uncle, is as far before a lot |of the Hollywood productions as light lis before dark. Cecil Scott and Tal ! Ordell play the Bloke and Ginger with a Wioolloomiooloo swagger, with the con ventional slang, and with all the manliness that one expects in "rough diamonds." Ray Fisher is the bit of sun shine who turns the industrial sufbuTb into paradise alley, and who, incidentally, by her tact enables the realism of the Bloke's manners to blend with the idealism in his heart. Keith Desmond (Umcle) and Athol Tier help Ordell on the comedy side, Dora Mostyn is Ma, and William Ralston is prin<*ipal villian. The supporting programme is also strong, featuring George Wallace in well-photographed comedy and another old friend in Minnie Love. The tap dancers, the Sundowners' Quartette and the violin and ballot ensemble were also well received..
"The Sentimental Bloke" screens at the De Luxe Theatre next Saturday afternoon and night and Monday and Tuesray nights. Box plana are now open at the "Peter Pa" Lounge.
