HUTT VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL
At the regular meeting of .the Hutt Valley High School Board of Governors held last week, the Principal, Mr H. P, iSdsoii, presented the following report showing the number of pupils who have left the school during the year ending 10/9/32 and their destination :~4Offico, 15 boys, 3 girls; shop, 2 boys, 3 girls; farming, 7 boys; home, 1 bO y, T girls; trades and factory, 7 boys, 1 girl; 'Varsity, 3 boys, 1 girl; domestic 1 girl; dressmaking and millinery 4 girls. -Nmriber who left some period last year, 15 boys; 14 girls. Those figures show that twice as many boys havo left to take positions during the actual school session this year as left during the same period last year. This is an indication, not only that employers are doing, their very best to help the situation, but that there is a definite advance in confidence in the business community. The position has cased as far as this school is concerned. *am glad to be able to say too that the number of old pupils who are unemployed is very small. Included in the .number" of boys in the above figures are half-a-dozen who a» still being trained by local bodies and others, until they are able to find permanent positions. Tfce boya concerned are getting very valuable^ experience and are all very grateful to those who are helping them. With the exception of accountancy, the so-called professions are for the ime being closed. My chief regret here is that some- excellent matenai [Ll would have gone into the> teachng proton and to thoPubU.sevice hus been diverted to work that is no t of *> great a value to the com-
£ the trades and industries there xs not the least doubt that more boys could find work immediately if apprenticeship regulations were revised or Lir application made less stringent. 8 before the Board at this L ting Vhich shows this quite clearly ■OnvJLr re ß ult of fee «.that mon^y has been more easily won than is good for the young. It will do no fcanu for them to have to show what they are worth and to fight a little for their positions. The effect of difficult times on the .pupils of a school such as this v. » many; ways salutory. They are far more serious over their work and far less Wai in every way. Although we all hope that the slump will soon end, we hope that some of its lessons will not Ko lost,
