At last week's meeting of the Hutt Valley High School Board of Governors advise was received from Mr Max Hugo that he had presented a shield to the school as a trophy in memory of his father for competition in public speaking. Mr Hugo was cordially thanked for Ms gift which will be available for competition this year.

{Readers are again reminded of the Optimists' Fair to be held in St. Stephen's Church Hall, Woburn Road, on Wednesday, sth October, commencing at 2.30 p.m. Special attention is drawn to -the faot that there will be a line "White Elephant" Stall from which many /useful articles will be available, very cheap. The book stall will also besure to attract considerable attention, whilst the display of goods on the "Baby Stall" will be most attractive. There will, of course, be produce and cake stalls, sweet stalls, plain sowing and novelty stalls, and excellent afternoon tea- will be provided at a reasonable figure. In the evening the Church Orchestra will provide music while games and competitions of various kinds will be carried on. The "White Elephant" Stall is organised by the Church Girls' Auxiliary. .

The Secretary of the Lower Hutt Branch of the Red Cross Society gratefully acknowledges gifts from the following:—Mesdames E. J. Hill, Millingtori, Fleming, Cole, W. H. Smith, John son, Perry, Fraser 10/-, and anony-

mous parcels.

Mr Walter Nash, M.P., is to lecture to-morrow evening in St. Stephen's Church at 8 o'clock under the auspices of The League of Nations Union. Mr -Nash is always interesting on this subject and no doubt the church, will be crowded. The public a*e invited.

|A meeting was held at the home of Mrs N. B. Giblbons last week, for the purpose of making some of the necessary arrangements in connection with tho Garden' Party- which will be held at her home on, October 29th in aid of the funds of St. James's Church. Strong committees were set up to carry out the arrangements on behalf of the various church districts and great enthusiasm, was shown." In addition to many stalls there will be fancy dancing on the lawn and the Hutt Municipal Band will play selections dur ing the afternoon.

When opening the Spring Flower Show last week, the Hon C. E. Macmillan remarked that the Hutt Valley was justly famous all over New Zealand for the-quality of flower grown here. "Next year," said the Minister, ''you will be celebrating your 25th birthday—what might be termed your Silver' Wedding—and I shall have mulch pleasure in donating to the Society a piece of silver as a trophy in celdbration of the occasion." • Tlpresident of the Society, Mr N. B. Gibbons, warmly thanked Mr Macmil* lan for his generous offer.

An effort is being made, to form an Old Pupils' Association from Central, Eastern Hutt and Epuni schools, and any ex-pupils who are interested in the formation of such an association are asked 3 to communicate with. Mr E. T. McKain, of 12 Stevens Road.

The organisers of Knox Birthday Sale anticipate a crowded hall on Thursday when there will be a rush for the bargains offering, and will be amazed at the low /prices. Useful aprons, original novelties, knitted goods, - jumble stall and home-made cakes and' sweets, and fresh produce, will be tempting to pass. The cooking wili be interesting. Enter for the best plain and iced sponge, fruit, loaf and shortbread. An excellent programme has been arranged for the evening.

An excellent programme has been arranged for the concert organised by the Hutt Valley Liedertafel and the Hutt Play Reading Qlvib and will 'be held in St. James's Hall to-night, in aid of the Parish funds. Among the vocalists will be Miss Christiana Young, Miss Phyllis Martin, Messrs H. Brusey, H. B. Rbbb and Assheton Harbord. The Liedertafel will render several of the most popular numbers selected from the two previous concerts and the Hutt Play Reading Olmb will produce a modern play by Gertrude Jennings en-titled "Isabel, Edward an™ Anne," Included in the cast are Mesdames Olp'bert and Yon Zedlitz and the Misses Humphries, N. Olphert and B. Jones and Messrs Foster and fijpite.
