WAIWETU RESIDENTS' PROTEST.

INCREASE OF RATES AND LACK

OF SERVICE

A strong protest was received by the Lower Hutt Borough Council at its meeting on Monday night, signed by 150 ratepayers on the Waiwetu Road and surrounding districts, and an intimation that a deputation would wait On the council at its next meeting. The letter accompanying the petition was signed by Mr. J. Brasscl and protested against the amount of rates demanded from them for the current year. '' This protest,';' they 'said, '' is not >o n*.uch due to the increase in the rates us to our conviction that the Waiwctu' "Road area is not receiving Jjrom the borough council service and facilities commensurate . with the , amount of rates now demanded. In support of this statement we would draw your attention to the following facts: — "1. There are no proper footpaths 1 throughout the whole length of the I road and pedestrians are forced to use 1 the highway, which, with the amount of ino'tor traffic—travelling mostly at high speeds—constitutes a grave danger, especially to women and children. Footpaths are provided in other less closely populated areas, and we think you will agree they should be provided in Waiwetu Road without delay. This we consider the most urgent of our requests. '' 2. Dui'ing the .summer months the dust nuisance is excessive, causing considerable inconvenience damage to property, and is a menace tq public health. 1 Wo respectfully request, there fore, that steps be taken during the next few months to regrade and tarseal the road, the surface of which at tie present time is- badly pOt-holed. As the volume of traffic now carried is considerable, we are of opinion that this request is a reasonable one. "3. The creek at the northern end of the .road, between Burnside and Norton. Park subdivision, is apparently developing into a rubbish dump, and is unsightly and objectionable. • In . addition it is a breeding ground for mosquitoes and sandflies during the warm weather, therefore we, request that this also receive immediate attention. "In view of the rapidly increasing population in. the Waiwetu district, and the fact that we are contributing toward the cost of unemployment relief works, we would earnestly commend the foregoing to your fullest con si deration." . . ' 'I|?J^f| The protest was referred to the works committee, and the council in--1 ftmated that it would be pleased to meet the deputation at next council meeting.
