HUTT ELECTORATE

MR. WILTOKD AT LOWER HUTT

Mr. T. M. Wilford was accorded a great ovation at a meeting of his friends and supporters held at Lower Hutt last week.

Referring, to the policy of the United Party as outlined by Sir Joseph Ward the previous night, Mr Wilford said that newspapers may criticise the policy, which was a fair attitude for them to take up, but they could not say the United Party had not a policy. The Labour-Socialist policy, said Mr Wilford, was: "Let us smash, the Reform policy to bits." The United policy was: "Let us build and help our country." A strong committee was formed, evidence being forthcoming that a successful campaign would be undertaken. Mr A. Macaskill was appointed chairman, Mr. F. Campbell was appointed vice-chairman, and Mr J. [Davidson seoretary of the Hutt branch.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Mr Wilford said he was more than proud at the response to his invitation, and was heartened and much helped by the expressions of good-will. Evidently when one worked for one's constituency genuine appreciation was felt, though not often publicly expressed.
