NEGLIGENT DRIVING
As the result of an accident on the Main Road at Taita on Saturday, May 19th, Roy L. Pilcher was charged with riding a motor cycle on the Main Road in a dangerous manner from which an accident arose involving injuries to a person. He was also charged with failing to report the accident at the nearest police station.
J. Spratley, a carpenter, residing at Wellington stated he was riding his bicycle along the road at Taita, when Pilcher run into him and as a result he received a sprained wrist and minor injuries. Witness was on his correct side of the road, and his bicycle was properly lighted. Defendant's cycle was lighted and he could see the headlight ahead of him. The cause of the accident in his (Spratley Js) opinion was due to negligence on the part of Pileher. Witness said Pilcher -was under the influence of liquor, and he had a lady passenger on the pillon seat.
Constable Frost stated that Spratley called to see him at the station and laid the complaint. In a statement Pilcher said he was travelling at 25 miles an hour and he Tnad a good light. He had had only one drink and that was at 3.30 that afternoon. He was near the AvalonjTea rooms'when he saw a bicycle in front of him 2 which had no lights. After the accident the other man was rude to Mm in front of the young lady. As Spratley was not injured he did not think he had to report the accident. t "bn the charge of negligent driving, '' said Mr Salmon, '' accused will be fined £3 and costs and for failing to notify the police he will be convicted and fined £1 and coats.
