LOWER HUTT RATES

REDUCTION OF 1 3-8 PENNY IN £1 "Some will be pleased and some will not be pleased when they have to their rates this year" said Mr W. T. Strand, Mayor of Lower Hutt, at Monday's meeting of the Borough Council. Mr Strand explained that there had been a levelling up of the rates in order to make things more even. The business portion of the towns had been reviewed, and other portions of the district subjected to a change. Portions that were not ' paying a reasonable quota would feel the change. Althuogh -the rate had been reduced from 6 3-Bd. to 5d in the £1 yet there were people whose values had been reduced, but who would have to pay more. Others would have to pay less. The latter would be pleased. Mr Strand also pointed out that the water rate .had been reduced from 2d to l*d in some cases and in others from id to £d. In conclusion, Mr Strand said that he could assur.e the Council that the rates of the Lower Hutt Borough would very much more than favourably^ compare with those in existence in many parts of New' Zealand and certainly with those of any city. "It is gratifying,'' he said '' to find that we are able to reduce our rate by 1 3-Bd. in the £1."
