Entries close for Spring Bulb Show on Wednesday, 19th September at noon.

Music lovers are reminded that Mr. Claude Haydon's Concert which.was postponed last month owing to the unfavourable weather, will be held#On 26th inst. All tickets issued for last concert . will be available for this performance.

The Post and Telegraph Department is now engaged in the erection of a new switch-board in the local Post Office. It is understood that this board is an im-' proved type that should facilitate the handling of the much increased volume of business that is passing through the office. Full details will probably be available later.

A^very enoyable afternoon was held in St. James's Hall on Thursday last in aid of the Church funds, the hall being tastefully decorated with spring flowers and greenery. Musical items, -which were much appreciated, were given by Mes-

3v,n, the accompanists being Mrs. Teagle and Miss Harte. Various competitions were held, the winners being Mesdames Meek, Glover, O'Shea, Bourke, Aldous and Kitto. The afternoon proved a great success both socially and financially, and well repaid the committee of ladies who organised it.

The Lower Hutt Association Football Cub's wind-up social will be held in tne Lyceum Hall on September 15th at 7.30 p.m. There will be dancing and a good ■programme of musical items, etc., has been arranged. Miss Gladys Smythe, the brilliant young dancer, will also give an exhibition of operatic dancing. A splendid evening's entertainment is assured* for all, and many are sure to avail theai^ se.-ves of the opportunity to join in the fun at the Soccer Club's final social evtnt of the footbaU season.

On Saturday afternoon next, September 15th, Mr. W. Field, M.P., will open the Bazaar to be held in the Taita Hall. Bus leaves Lower Hutt P.O. at 2.15 and 7 p.m. Fares 6d. Leaving Taita Hall at 5 and 9.30 p.m.

Hutt Flower Show on Thursday, 20th September and Friday, 21st September. The MacMillan Benefit Concert recently arranged by the Petone Maori Benefit Entertainers proved a great success, resulting in an approximate profit of £45. The committee wish to thank the proprietors of King George Theatre for their donation of £5 and Mr. R. Denby for his untiring courtesy and consideration, and the many others who did so much to make the concert a success. The public is indebted to the Maori Entertainers for producing such a bright performance for so worthy an object.

The Hutt Valley Spring Show will be oponed by Sir Heaton Rhodes at 3 p.m on Thursday, 20th September.

The Hutt Valley, Dramatic and Operatic Society will produce the musical extravangaza "Cupid and the Orgre" in the King George Theatre on. Monday Ist October. Reports from the producer are very favourable, and we understand that the production is now almost, ready and that the performance will be most enjoyable. It is a clever comedy, brimful of laughs, bright snappy dialogue, brisk and tuneful melody, and absolutely "up to the minute." The company has spared no effort to make the show a success, and every member of the entire cast is enthusiastic over the forthcoming production.

Salmon, 5.M.., on Wednesday, referring to a lorry on which he was making monthly payments of £25. Salmon, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court on Wednesday morning on a judgment summons for area is in rent amounting to £16 15s 6d he stated that he was unable to pay off more than 2s 6d a week. He was in casual work only and receiving £4 ss, • per week, on which he had to support a wife and three /children; in addition to paying the rental for a 4-roomed house, amounting to £2 2s 6d. "What I cannot understand," said the Magistrate in making an order for 5s per fortnight, "is why, when you were earning £6 15s a week 2 a good wage, you were unable to put something aside. You say that at present while geting £4 ss. you are in a position to pay 2s 6d weekly off the arrears. I have too many of these cases before the Court." ' «
