PEDDINGTON SUPERANNUATION SCHEME

Mr Wilford (Hutt), with the leave of the House, asked the-Minister in charge of the Public Service Superannuation Department whether he would bring before Cabinet the Peddington scheme under which all retired civil servants shall be paid full pensions during their lives, and after their death that half of such pensions shall be paid to the widows of the deceased. At present the actuaries had no information on which to base an estimate of the cost of such a scheme. In many cases the wives died before the husbands, and in tho-:e cases no money of course would be payable to the wives, but he would like to know' whether the Minister could premise any information as to what such a scheme would cost and whether it would be workable, or whether he would bring the matter before Cabinet •with, a view to having it Investigated, cot only actuarially, but generally.
