HUTT TELEPHONES

In the House of Representatives yes- +* "afternoon Mr T. M. Wilford (Hutt) > asked the Acting-Postmaster-General what was the cause of the delay in the promised change over in the Hutt Valley telephone system, as the promise, of the Goverment was definite and unqualified that the work would be done. The Hon. K. S. Williams replied that the problem of a new automatic telephone system for the Hutt Valley was being closely investigated. The requirements of the district were unusual and -the matter could not be decidedquickly. When the Department's (#iehief telegraph engineer was abroad similar problems to that of the Hutt Valley were discussed with telephone experts of other countries. The Department's proposals were that, those sub* scribers who so elected might have automatic telephone service only and pay fees- for inter-communication with the Wellington telephone system, while others would be given full intercommunication with the local and city systems at a fixed annual rental.
