THE BUS SERVICE
The bus-travolling public will bo pleased to-learn' that their interests are being much, more closely watched than they are aware of. It was in response to an article appearing in the "Hutt News'* recently that two of the departmental officials waited on the- editor yesterday and informed him that the public is receiving greater service at the present time than they over did under private control. A very strict check is kept on all runnings and if a bus does not run to time-table, an explanation is demanded. One of the troubles the department have to contend with is the fact that many people will not substantiate their charges and will refuse to give their names. The department is most anxious to make the most searching enquiries to any complaints that aro made, but if they cannot get any assistance from, those who have (or think they have) a grievance, it makes it very difficult. The statement frequently heard that the Government is trying to make the buses unpopular in order to force patronage to the railway was emphatically denied by these departmental officers. * ' That is absolutely untrue," was the reply. "The bus service is entirely separate from the Railway Department and has to do all it can to make it pay."
