RUGBY NOTES.
Now that the local cricket season is over intending players can give serious consideration to training. In view of the fact that matches will probably commence the Saturday after Easter it is up to every player to put in two nights at the Gymnasium each week and do a bit of private training. The season will be an important one in the history of the Hutt Club, owing to the fact that the Senior team will be striving to regain its place in the "A" Grade. With the material available this can be accomplished, providing players pay strict attention to training, so it is up to everyone to get fit for the initial match.
A list of available players will be of- interest to supportei's so that-they may gauge the possible strength of the" Senior team. Of those who played last year the following have given notice of their intention to play again:—Foote, Munro, M'Carthy, Hume, Gibson, Smith, Fisher, George, Sundgreen, Peck, McGill, Langford, Daily, and Rea. Berntsen is doubtful. Ex-members who have rejoined are H. Wright, R. McKay, Woods, and Waters. New members include the following who have played senior football in other districts: —R. E. Foote (full-back), W. T. Marriner (centre), and W. J. Davis (hooker). T. Reretai is also thinking of playing again, and if he trains seriously, should have a serious claim for lock position. W. E. Jarman, N. Alexander and E. Rea have also to be considered, with N. McGreivie, a hooker from the Wellington Club. Four full-backs are available. Should Wright's knee stand up to training he will be hard to beat for a place in view of his experience. Jarman is a very promising player, and wotild probably make gocd in Senior B football. Good wing three quarters are wanted, and it is hoped that Woods and Waters have improved as the result of a year's Senior B football in Christchurch. Gibson, Marriner, and Jarman will have claims for the position of centre, with Smith, McKay, and Fisher to make up a solid set of inside backs. George, Sundgreen, Peck, Langford, McGill, and Daily should be certainties for places in the vanguard, with several fighting for the position of hooker. Berntsen, if available, would make either a good hooker or inside back.
Porirua and Eastbourne have applied for practice matches, so there should be opportunities of trying players out. Major King has been re-appointed as coach, and it has been decided to hand over the Senior and Junior backs to R. McKay, Major King to take over the forwards. The Junior coach has not yet been appointed. Mr. Francis takes over the Thirds, Mr. L. Clarke the Intermediate A, Messrs. Morrison and Nicholls the Fourth A and B respectively, and Mr. Mclntyre the Fifths. More players are wanted for the latter team. Other coaches are wanted, and the secretary will be pleased to hear from any volunteers.
