HUTT FLOWER SHOW
The Hutt Valley Horticultural Society's Autumn Flower Show was opened on 21st April by Sir Alexander Roberts, a Vice President of the Society, who kindly performed the ceremony in the unavoidable absence of the Premier. Sir Alexander who was accompanied by Lady Roberts, was introduced by Mr. G. A. Chapman, the Acting - President. Among those present, and who were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Chapman were:—Si rJohn and Lady Luke, Miss Skerrett, Mrs. A. J. Seddon, Dr. and Mrs. J. Novice. R.H.S. Bronze medals were awarded to Mrs. H. W. Kersley for her decorated afternoon tea table, and H. Poole, A. McMillan; R.H.S. certificates to Mr. F. Westbury for his collection of pumpkins, Mrs. T. C. Bilby for her collection of gladioli, and C. E. Buckingham for his collection of dahlias. "William Turner" blooms, which have often proved the best I looms in the show, were again successful. A bloom of this variety exhibited by J. Kershaw was the best bloom in the open class; another exhibited by Dr. J. R. Boyd was the best bloom in the amateur class, and again in the novice class this variety gave the prize to Mrs. E. Howe. The much-coveted F. R. Cooper memorial for the most meritorious exhibit was awarded to W. Copping for a splendid exhibition of vegetables. The points prizes were:—Chrysanthemums—Open class :S. T. Wakelin; amateur class, Dr. J. R. Boyd. Vegetables—Open class: F. Bertelsen; amateur class, Mrs. E. Pyne. In the chrysanthemums (open class) the principal winners were S. T. Wakelin five firsts and four seconds, F. Westbury two firsts and four seconds, J. Kershaw three firsts and one second, C. E. Buckingham one first (single chrysanthemums), and A. T. Penrose one first. Chrysanthemums (amateur section). —Dr. J. R. Boyd five firsts and two seconds, J. J. Alexander four firsts and two seconds, G. W. Gaudin two seconds. Chrysanthemums (novice class). — Mrs. G. Howe three firsts arid A. Jamieson three seconds. Dahlias (amateur class). —G. W. Gaudin one first and one second, and Mrs. S. M. Hobbs one first. In the general class (open), J. J. Reich, a first for tuberous begonias; H. Poole, a first for foliage plants; Mrs. C. M. Palmer, a first for cut flowers. General class (amateur): Mrs. C. M. Palmer, a first each for a foliage plant and ferns. Fruit (open class). — Apples: R. Bartosh, four firsts and three seconds and one highly commended; C. J.
Simpson, a second; and J. J. Reich, a highly commended. Pears: J. J. Reich, a first and a second. Cape Gooseberries: Mrs. E. M. Presants, one first.
Vegetables (open class). —F. Bertelsen, five firsts. (The 4udge, Mr. F. Westbury, made special mention of several of Mr. Bertelsen's exhibits.); F. W. Ching, two firsts; and TV C. Bilby, two seconds. W. Copping, described by the judge as "a very fine display," a first, a collection of vegetables.
Vegetables (amateur class). —Mrs. E. Pyne, two firsts and two seconds; Mrs. H. Schneider, two firsts and one second; C. J. Simpson and Mrs. W. H. Smith, each two firsts; Mrs. F. C. Ching, one first and four seconds; J. Paul, one first and two seconds; A. Peck and Miss Betty Jarman, each one first: and Mr. C. Gough, a second and a highly commended. J. G. Jeffrie's representative collection of vegetables was described by the judge (Mr. F. Westbury) as in its class "far ahead of any I have ever judged before.". Decorated Tables. —Mrs. P. Walker first and Miss A. McMullan second.
Decorative class (adults). —Mrs. S. M. Hobbs, two firsts and five seconds; Mrs. Walker, two firsts; Mrs. J. M. Boyd, Mrs. H. Schneider, and Miss D. Kersley, each one firsts Mrs. E. A. Grimwood, one second. Decorative Class (children). —Miss Ethel Schneider, two firsts; Master S. J. Hobbs, one first and one second; and Miss M. McMillan, one second.
Home Industries (cookery).—Mrs; H. Schneider, two firsts and one second; Mrs. G. W. Gaudin, two firsts; Mrs. I. Wakelin, one first and two seconds; Mrs. C. Slater, one first arid one second; Mrs. E. M. Presants, Mrs. T. C. Bilby, Mrs. S. Stuart, Miss Finlay, and Mrs. W. R. Robson, each one first; Mrs. A. Jarman, Mrs. H. Clenio, Mrs. J. B. Wood, and Mrs. Mcllwraith, each a second. Jams and Pickles: Mrs. F. W. Ching, two firsts and one second; Mrs. C. Slater, one first and one second; Mrs. Mcllwraith, one first; and Miss Strand and Mrs S. Stuart, .each a second. Fancy Work.—Mrs. H. S. Sivell, two firsts and two seconds; Miss W. Macdonald, one first, two seconds, and one highly commended; Mrs. H. A. Yates, one first; Mrs. L. Jones v one second; and Miss J. Hendry,. a highly commended.
Children's Cookery.—Miss Molly A. Best, ■ three firsts; Miss Ethel Schneider, two firsts and one second; Miss Ida, Clemo, a first and a second; Miss Betty .Mcllwraith, two seconds; Miss Mary Ching and Miss Kathleen Slater, each a second; and Miss Mary Waielin, a highly commended. The Ladies' Committee, under the capable direction of Mrs. T. O. Bishop, provided excellent afternoon teas. Mrs. E. Yates was in charge, of the flower stall, and had the assistance of Mrs. Hendry and the Misses Kitto.
