TEMPERANCE WORK AMONGST THE MAORIS.

On Tuesday of last week Mrs Hewett gave a tea to the Maori children who have attended Miss Ratiina's Sunday school, and the Government school, and was assisted at the tea and entertainment by the Misses Ratiiim, Macpherson, Sophie Kerri, and Butt. Several of the mothers were present and the audience numbered altogether about 100. Mrs Hewett. in addressing the children reminded them that the present meeting was in fulfilment of a promise made six months ago. She exhorted them to be regular in their attendance at the Sunday school as well as the Government school as her hope and expectations for the future of the Maorirace could only be realised in the children. Tho then expressed her wish to form the first Maori branch of the " Ministering Children's League " which had been doing great and good work all over the world with the approval of the Dignitaries of the Roman, Anglican and and other sections of Christianity. The legue had heen founded by the Countess Heath and might be called the " League of Kindness." Forty one children gave in their names as members—their' followed games which all joined in with great zest ; then some singing by th;; Napier College young ladies and also tho children. Votes of thanks were accorded to to Mrs Eoley for interpreting—to Miss Ratema, superintendent of the Sunday school and the young natives who had assisted at the tea tables and three cheers for Mrs Hewott—the meetingthen closed with the singing of a Hymn in which all heartily joined.
