THE NEW BOWLING GREEN.
On Saturday night last the immediate neighborhood of the CnnoN'icr.E Office presented a very brilliant appearance. Strangers thought that the proprietor of the paper was holding high festival at the unexpected payment of some of his long out-standing accounts ; but it was not so. The demonstration came from next door and celebrated the opening of the Grand Hotel Bowling Green. In the space of a few months a piece of ground has through the skill of the gardeners engaged iru the work been made to " blossom like the rose." A splendid sward admirably suited to the "royal game of bowls" has been produced, and the shrubs and flowering plants* which form the margin have been tended with the greatest care and now yield the most favorable results. On Saturday night the effect was enhanced by the lighting up of the grounds by Chinese lanterns 'neath the glare of which the visitors to the house and a few invited guests promenaded for an hour or so. The Tuhourangi Brass Band, under the leadership of Mr 11, Stewart, was in attendance and filled the night with music so that " The cares which infest the day Folded their tents, like the Arabs, And silently stole away." Mr James Shaw on behalf of the invited guests complimented the manager, Mr Boulton, on the excellence of the arrangements and trusted that this was but the forerunner of many similar gatherings. The following is the programme of the selections played by the Band on the occasion :—Quick step, " Annie Dear I'm calcd away;" waltz, "Ida;" fantasia, "Magenta;" polka, "Alpine;" quick step, "Starlit Dell;" waltz-, " Darling Mine;" selection, •'TbeVillageMaiden;" polka, "Julia;" Finale, "Her Majesty's Jubilee."
