THE HOT LAKES CHRONICLE AND Tourists' Journal. SATURDAY, JANUARY 16, 1897.
The Postal Department cannot be complimented on the new arrangement in regard to the arrival and departure of the mail. We are virtually no better off, save in the choice of routes, than we were when there were only two mails per week, Formerly mails left here on -Mondays and Fridays returning on Tuesdays and Saturdays, which expedited con espondeuce eon iderahly as it was csuite possible to send a reply by the return coach. Now, the mails leave both ends via Te Puke on the same day, passing each other half way, and serving no good purpose so far as we can see. The mail via Oropi leaves Tauranga on the Wednesday returning from Rotorua on tlie following day a much more sensible arrange* nient. To sum up the po ition : A mail leaves here for Tauranga every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and the return mail comes in every Tuesday, Wednesday and Fri lay. We are not aware that there is any obstacle in the way of adopting the more Sfaiisible plan of despatching the mails on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from cither Kotorua <>r Tauranga -o that the return journey could be made on I uesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. By so doing the public would bo better served and we conceive that consideration for the public convenience should stand before everything else in the Postal Department.
