Pix events will be contested and natives only will he allowed to enter. Two canoe hurdle races are included in the programme which will, on acouuut ul their novelty, attract many onlookers. Stead's Masterpiece Library, Numbers 1, 2 and 3 to hand, Threepence each at Chronicle Office. 4 Mr J. P. Backhouse, whose minature paintings in oils have mot with a large sale both in Auckland and locally, is about to make a sketching tour of this district. At tho'Magistrate's - Court on' Monday last before Lieut.-Col. Roberts the following cases were disposed of:—Waratini Eparania charged with nsing threatening language to Panopa Nihotalii was found guilty and (hied os and costs. —-Rewiri Mumakn was charged by Mekerei Nga.tai with wilful damage to property at Owhutioa on September 16th. After I, hearing the evidence tlid case was dismissed.—William Calverlev and Atatalii Ft Kiri were charged by Matubu Enoka with taking from the bush 100 rimu fencing posts of the value of £l. After hearing evidence tho charge against the native was dismissed. Calvcrley was ordered to pay the value of the posts together with a penalty of !20s and costs, or suffer .imprisonment for 10 days with hard labbVir. A few debt cases were disposed ot. Mr W. H. lierries, member for the district, arrived in Rotorua on Monday night and left again for Shaftesbury yesterday morning. In a conversation with Mr'Herrics lie stated that lie was more than satisfied with the measure of support he received in Rotorua at tho election. He had come here an entire stranger but he had been cordially received both by supporters and opponents. Tho election had been fought with tho utmost /airness and the result of tho contest was somewhat of a surprise to him. when' ho considered the powerful influence that was arrayed against him. However tho people were with him and tho battle was consequently won. Mr Herries will pay another visit to Rotorua bofo*o Parliament meets which lib thinks will bo sonic time in July. A selection of minature' views of the various places of interest in and around Rotorua, Wliak are ware \va, &c., lias been received at the Chronicle Office. These' little oil paintings are by Mr J. P. - Backhouse of Newton Road, Auckland, and are well worthy the attention of those desirous of possessing or of sending to their friends an interesting'and artistically executed souvenir of tho district.ACTION!
