THE BAND OF HOPE.
' To the Editor. Sir—The Band of Eope supporter, have with commendable energy raigj nearly sufficient money for tbe°purcha«! of a piano for their monthly entertain. ments, &c, but as is almost invariablv the case with these subscription instru! ments—witness the last piano so provided also the several harmoniums previo islv procured in the same way—the purpose they are intended to serve rarely or n >ver get the benefits to which they can fairly lay the most claim. Tin's piano, it Wll ' s distinctly understood by those who iig. sisted in raising the money, and, in f,,,.. by all or nearly all of those who ru£ scribed directly or helped by attending the entertainment got up to increase the piano fund, was for the sole benefit of the Band of Hope and if used by anyone rise the hire of it should be paid for. if, «. is mooted, other organizations are to have any interest in the ownership of the piano a full and complete explanation will be demanded. If any person wishin« to subscribe to the piano will only do sn on certain conditions then the subscription must be refused in common justice to the other subscribers who will not permit themselves to be hoodwinked ao-ain and again—in trying to help the object they feel interested in. The seorecy that obtains with the management, of the Rotorua Band of Hope with regard to its financial matters will soon earn it an illI name. Collections are taken up at each meeting but seldom reported, and it was a general opinion that one good hidv visitor had some time ago sent a donation of £2o to further this temperance movement either in a general or in some particular way; but nobody knows the rio-hts of this. If it was so the money should at least be available, as each member of the Rotorua Band of Hope has an equal right to determine the use of such money and if not immediately wanted it should be placed in the Tost Office Savings Bank and be earning something for itself Where is the financial report from the last Band of Hope social 'i Judging from the number who attended something substantial should have resulted. Receipts and expenditure should l>e distinctly shown. Band if Hope members should not forget that many people attend flair entertainments from a laudable desire to assist a good object and they naturally wish to sco how the affair results, but especially with the Band of Hope seldom indeed does anything relating to the financial success or otherwise leak out from the small coterie who manage these things. Trusting to receive a fall and complete explanation from tho responsible persons,—l am, &c, "X. Bay" llotorua, October '2O.
