TAUPO.

[FKOM OUR OWN OOBBESrOXDEXT.] Mr W. H. Hemes, who is to seek our sufl'rages at the next election, has been here and gone again down your way. He has a pleasant manner and succeeded in ingratiating himself with the people. He put up at the "Lake" and I am afraid the political belief of his host has been somewhat shaken. During Thursday Mr Hemes was busy calling on all the principle people in the place and, I understand, expressed himself satisfied with the reception he met with. On Friday he left by special for Atiamuri calling on various settlers en route. He reserves his visit to Tokaanu till later on. This was Mr Herries' first visit to Taupo and he did not conceal his astonishment that a place with so many and varied attractions should be, comparatively speaking, so little visited. Professor Forbes has been staying at Mr Joshua's " Spa " of late and is still busily engaged in his work in connection with the Huka Falls scheme. He has been taking soundings along the river right up to its issue from the Lake. The rabbits mentioned in a previous issue are still in evidence as last week one was shot by a visitor, while it is reported that some cats had successfully caught another. It is hoped that the rodents will not increase so much as to become a nuisance to the inhabitants and destructive to their cultivations. Dan Ferney has been busy overhauling his " fleet " for the coming season and it is expected their speed will be much accelerated. This is good news for these who prefer sailing on our inland inoana to using the coach road.
