THE HOT LAKES CHRONICLE AND Tourists' Journal. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 1896.

PltOFESsofi Forbes, who passed through here lastw ick, is now making a complete survey of the Huka Falls and will probably remain at TVairakei for two or throe ■weeks. It is understood that his opinion us to the suitability of the Falls for the required purpose is :t favorable one but nothing definite can be said till the survey is completed. The outlay, however, in the matter of plant, &c., will be enormous. The advantages which would accrue to the district by the erection of a hydraulic plant at the Falls are very evident, and if the scheme is at all likely to be proceeded with it is necessary that, the Waiotapu-Tauporoad should be pushed on energetically as by that route much heavy machinery would have to beconveyed. The Areateatea rapids, three miles below the Falls, were also visited by Professor Forbes who was much struck with their beauty. Although a good deal of rain had fallen previously the Water was of a beautiful bine color and the series of cascades which form the rapids had a magnificent effect.

one to remove the remains of a friend every facility will be afforded and a place provided in ilie new cemetery. In regard to the blocking of the road by tiro erection of the fence a new path is now being made. Mr Baber is now engaged in surveying the new cemetery. One-quarter of the whole area will be laid out in grave plots to the number of 300.

Mr Elsddn Best, whose articles in the CHRONICLE !'ln Ancient Maori Land" are now being prepared for publication in pamphlet form, has been in Rotorua for the past week after an eighteen months' sojourn in Tiihoe-land. "Mr Best is an enthusiast in all matters of Maori ethnology and philology and during his "quiet hermitage" in the TTrewera country he has amassed a deal of now and interesting information regarding Maori manners and customs ; he has listened to their songs and s;ie;as and duly recorded them as opportunity offered. The result of Mr Best's researches will shortly bo issued in book form from the Lands and Survey Department and will be illustrated by photographs taken on the spot by Mr Humphries, chief surveyor, Hawkes Bay.
