TOWN BOARD MEETING.

A meeting of the Town Board was held in Mr Malfroy's office on Friday last. Present—Messrs Malfroy, (chair), Brent, Dansey, and Dr Ginders. ArroixTMEirr of Town Ci.ehk, &c. The members went into committee to consider the applications for the office of Town clerk, inspector of nuisances, clerk of works, &c. On resuming the Chairman announced that Mr B. S. Corletthad j been unanimously chosen to fill the position. Aerated Mixeral Watehs. Mr Charles Clarko applied for tho sole right to the overflow water of the Kuirau and other springs for a term of years, under such conditions as the Board might be pleased to impose. As he would go to considerable expense in advertising and otherwise bringing the waters under the attention of the public he submitted that it' the Board looked favorably on his application the sole right to bottle and sell the same should bo given for a stated period. Otherwise he would not be justified in going to the expense he contemplated. Di- Ginders stated that half-a-dozen bottles of the Kuirau water aerated by Mr Clarke had been submitted to him. He found tho water most palatable and very similar to Apollinaris water, containing all its ingredients and a fair proportion of iron. Before the Kuirau water was offered to the public, however, a vary minute and careful analysis should be made. He was quite satisfied as to the wholesomeness of the water but he thought it would be best to do so. Of course the Board could not give Mr Clarke the concession asked for; they could only recommend the matter to the Government. In regard to other springs than the Kuirau some, of these were not ; adapted to Mr Clarke's purpose. The r Rachel water, for instance, contained a I good deal of sulphuretted hydrogen which j did not improve it by keeping. The Chairman stated that other parties [ had been in quest of a similar concession and had proposed to go to work on an extensive scale. Ti.ey seemed to have abandoned the idea, however, as he had heard nothing of tin- proposition from the time it was made in January last. It it was the opinion of the Board that Mr Clarke's application should be granted they would have to go very carefully to work, as anyone having such a right might bottle any water he pleased and sell it as Kuirau, water. On the Continent the bottles containing such waters were sealed and guaranteed by tho Go- . vornmeut otherwise the water would get into bad repute. All that the Board could do was to recommend to the Government, that Mr Clarke be granted a monopoly of the waters for a certain period on condition that the industry was fairly developed within a certain time. After some further discussion it was decided that the Government be recommended to grant the request, so far as the Kuirau was concerned, for three years on the following conditions :—(1.) That the business be established within 12 months. (2.) That no royalty be charged for the first 12 months ; afterwards at tho late of Is per gross bottles. (8;) That the water be hottled within a nuie of the spring and that the premises be open to the inspection of the Board in order to see that genuine mineral water of the Kuirau is bottled and sold. It was also agreed that if such were granted Mi Clarke showld have the preference in the event of other applications being made for the water of other springs, and that no such applications should be entertained for at least 12 months from the date of the agreement with Mr Clarke. Miscellaneous. The lease of the Town Board paddock to the proprietors of the Grand Hotel was submitted for signature. As the lessee was put to no inconvenience by the delay it was resolved to defer the matter till the nest regular meeting. It was decided that the usual donation of £o to the Library and Reading Room should be granted. Several applications for trees, in terms of advertisement in Cukoxicle, for planting on Arbor Day were received. Several matters of minor importance having been considered the meeting closed.
