A correspondent signing himself " Nature" writes to the Post as follows:—" Baron Rothschild, who is a great collector has recently received a large case of stuffed birds from NewZealand. Among the collnction therf* n.re 90 specimens of stitchboard, and these 90 specimens which aie probably the last of their rice were obtained from the Little Barrier Island and all expense of purchasing the Island from the natives and appointing a caretaker to prevent the birds being destroyed ban been ineffectual. These rare Kew Zealand birds fetch a high price in Europe and several kinds have been exterminated recently by collectors so that unless the (ioverunient takes immediate steps to prevent it many others will soon share their fate." A considerable addition was lately made, by volcanic upheaval, to an island in the Santa Barbara group, which lies about 60 miles from the Ciilifornian coast. Between sunset and sunrise a inasß of rock, 1000 ft long by 300 ft broad, rose from the sea and added itself to the coast line of one island.
