MR W. C. WALKER'S VISIT.
Mr W. C. Walker, Minister of Educaand Acting-Colonial Secretary, accompanied by Mr McKenzie, junr., arrived in Rotorua on Saturday night and took up Ins quarters at Brent's Bathgate House. Shortly after hi.-i arrival Mr Walker was waited on by Mr C. Malfroy and 1)r Ginders as representing the Town Board and after a lengthy conversation the particulars of the requirements of the town were formulated as follows :
(1.) A sum of £IOOO to carry out the proposed open system of drainage by means of concrete channelling in the new town also a sum of £2OO for similar work in Ohineniutu.
(-.) A sum of £ 1..300 for the completion of the water supply system ; to be expended in the proper reticulation of those streets where the suctions are leased and occupied.
(3.) The construction of the wharf at the lower end of Tutanekai Street, for which the money lias been already voted >•) A sum of £GOO for the construction of a carriage drive to the- summit of •Ngongotnha, es surveyed. (5.) To make provision to enable the Town Board to borrow a sum of £3OO at say u per cent for the puspose of building a Town Board Office, &c.
. (6.) r» ni tke'pro vision for the construction of *lO chains of a narrow gnage light tramway from the Pavilion to the Sulphur Baths, including car to carry 1-2 to lo passengers. £l5O.
(7.) Tho appointment of additional Justices of the Pence.
Ou Sundey Mr Malfroy conducted the Minister over the Sanatorium Grounds visiting and inspecting the various bathhouses and the new swimming bath in course of construction.. The site fixed on for the night soil depot was also visited and the Minister was satisfied that there was. no danger of polluting either the lake or any of the existing baths. The line of the proposed channelling was also inspected and the proposed course to be adopted in c-irrvitur out the same work in the old town was- pointed out. The native pa at the old town was traversed and generally Mr Wallace obtained a clear insight regarding the locale of the various works proposed. In the afternoon Mr Walker drove to Wliakai owarewa and as it was his first visit to the Hot Lakes he was much impressed by what he saw there: On the Minister's return to Auckland he will suomit the proposals to Mr McKenzie and will also call in Mr Gerhard Mueller to assist in their deliberations. So far. as the drainage and water re.ienlafion arc concerned Mr Walker thinks they are bound to be carried out, forthwith and the other requirements will receive every consideration. Mr Walker left by special train for Auckland on Monday morning.
