THE HOT LAKES CHRONICLE AND Tourists' Journal. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 22, 1896.

♦ A most distressing and regrettable state of affairs occurred at the interment that took jilnco in the old cemetery on Thurxlny last, ni.d which we trust has only to he mentioned to prevent its recurrence i n the future. When the funeral party Arrived at the place of burial it was found that the rain which had fallen overnight had iinlf-filled the giave, and it was therefore impossible to proceed with the ceremony at the spot chosen. The site selected was close beside where Bainbridge'Bmonumentonce stood, and it had generally been supposed that owing to the low-lying situation of Ihe

ground no further interments would take place in that locality. All speed was used in preparing another grave on higher ground but the pain of the relatives if the deceased at the untoward sight was most distressing to witness. It was the more regrettable for the reason that it might easily have been avoided had a proposition made, we believe by Mr Dansey, at a meeting of the Town Board some time ago, been carried inro effect. Mr Dansey suggested that a few acres of the higher ground should bo fenced in and an approach formed from the Maketu Road. II id this idea been given effect the higher ground would undoubtedly been usud and this would have saved many bitter expressions being levelled at tho Town Board for their seeming neglect of God's Acre. We trust that Mr Dansey will embody his former proposal in a definite form and submit it to the next meeting of the Board.
