THE HOT LAKES CHRONICLE AND Tourists' Journal. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 11, 1896.
Judge Gut, has lately been negotiating for the purchase of tlio Mangorewa Kaharoa block which comprises 42,949 acres The block, extends from Waimehia on the north side of Hotoi-ua Lake to the Waeranga block runs back north to the Mangorcwa river and the Rerenga Btreani, and to the west adjoins the Waikato country. At the Native Land Court on Thursday ] as t on the application for the partition of the block 14,998 acres were awarded to the Crown. This area takes in about two miles of the lake shore from the Waeranga boundary to a quarter of a mile west, of Hamurana and thence north till the area is obtained. The famous spring thus becomes the property of the Crown and we may look forward to the early abolition of tile toll levied by the natives on tourists. The land is fairly good for agriculture and first class for pasture, and as soon as the necessary surveys are completed it will be thrown open for selection. In the course of time the mnin road from Tauranga and Te Puke is bound to run through the block as a saving of above 2(1 miles can be effected and the present detour round the lake avoided. In the section awarded to the Crown are several ancient • burial places of the Ngatirangiwewehi tribe. These spots which comprise 12 acres altogether are permanently reserved.
