THE HOT LAKES CHRONICLE AND Tourists' Journal. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1896. STANDING IN OUR OWN LIGHT.

Mil'. L. D. "Xa-tllAx in an interview with a Hkuald reporter the other day deplored the ignorance- whicli exists throughout the Continent of European regard i'o New Zealand. [ll the British Islands it was the same tiling ; periodical literatim; was' found in the large hotels from all parts of the world —save New Zealand. " The country wants advertising, said Mr Nathan, and every sensible person will echo-the sentiment. "I made enquiries" lie continued "otseveralvery eminent nied-id.-il men as to the mineral waters of New Zealand. Their curative properties were unknown. These gentlemen turned up ! their books in which they had all the known medicinal waters of Europe, with their properties. But there was nothing of New Zealand. Our Government should see to this. A good 111:111 could easily begot to visit us and analyse our springs, and the'results heralded in the medical papers. When in Vichy I had a conversation with thi) gentleman in charge there, lie showed me books upon all the waters printed in every European language, and these books are published broadcast. I took some of them back to London, and' gave them tothe Agent-General, so that hecould send tliem out to the Government here;andlet them see what other people do. Then as to the tourist traffic: Nice; the whole of the Itivicra, Switzerland, Egypt, the wat-jring-places of Germany and of Britain, and many-other places, live solely 011 the tourists ,of whom there areenormous numbers. All these places are" pushed! If New Zealand were dealt with similarly look at the benefit itwould be to every class of the community. Some information-as that of which I have spoken should be on the tables of- all the best hotels, not only of Britain, but of Germany, France, and Egypt, so' as to malic the colony known."
