The woman barber is evidently , fixed iiißuUuiuii in Chicago, where she' has become so pipular and successful! tli,at trade jealously was aroused, ana it was determine'! to pass au ordinance prohibiting women from ergaging i a the occupation of a barber. One of the chief lady barbers thereupon made u D her mind to defend her right to practice the profession she had chosen, and attended the meeting on her own behalf, and on that of the hundred and fifty other women barbers in the city. She represented that women are coming to the front in this busi. ness. "There is a reason for this," she said. "Women barbers do not drink nor carouse, consequently their nerves are always steady and their touch is light. They do not chow tobacco nor smoke cigars and always treat their customers with the utmost politeness." This plain talk created a great uproar, but the speaker smiled and sat down, satisfied that she had shown the meeting that women can hold their own anywhere.
