A story is told of an incident in the recent Chritral Expedition which shows what roads are like in those parts. In one district there was just room for the camels to walk in single file. One dropped dead. The only mode of clearing the track for Colonel Kelly's force was to blow the beast up. The Dowager Empress of China when a child was sold as a slave by her parents owing to theiF poverty. SI e was bought by a genera!, who adopted her as hia daughter, and presented her to the Emperor. Ho charmed was ho with her beauty that be made her bis wife, and when ho died the former slave became Urgent of 1&q Empire.
