AUSTRALASIA V. ARGENTINA.

A correspondent of the Australasian Pastoralisis' Review, maintains that the cornpetitio.'i of the Argentine with Australasia will before long be abruptly stopped by war. Writing in the beginning of June, he refers to both Argentina and Chili as busily increasing their armaments, and states that those best informed louk forward to a war between the two countries in the spring as certain. Then, he says, business of all kinds will be stopped, the greater part of the harvest will be ungathered and ilucks unshorn ; Australasia will reap a rich harvest, but the Argentine will be ruined, and what the end of it will be to the republic cannot be foretold. It is an extremely pessimistic view of the position, yet who is to Eay that the predictions are unwarranted by the evidence which the correspondent submits to his readers. Chill is cultivating Anglo-Saxon immigration, civilisation and arts including that ot war ; Argentina is clinging to the old traditions of the Latm race, and discourages intermixture uf the races, uhm is depleting Argentina of animals for food and tor transport. Everything Uic Chilians do is solid ; everything the Argentines do is a pretence. The case as stated is certainly not in favour of Argentina. It is even said that the supply of fat cattle for live export is already at an end, and that Australasia's opportunity must almost at once begin, The important point is oyerlooked thai Australasia and Argentina are not the only producing countries in tho world. The former could only share in, not monopolise, any advantage that a South American war might confer upon peaceful nations, But it is evident that affairs in Argentina are approaching a crisis, which will severely handicap the country in its struggle fcr a foremost place in the produce markets of the world.
