Thomas Hutchison, a young man of good family, who studied for the bar in Auckland, New Zealand, when a youth, was, on Juno 14th, sentenced by Judge "Wallace, in the Superior Court, San Francisco, to imprisonment for life in the Californian State Prison, at Ran Chicntin, after a conviction of assault and robbery. Young Hutchison made an eloquent appeal on his own bebalf, and his counsel also made a strong plea for mercy; but, unfortunately, bis client bad been previously convicted of a similar offence. A melancholy feature of the case is that Hutchison's father had recently arrived in San Francisco from New Zealand, and would soon be joined by his mother. A very important table published by ' Pentagraph ' in the Weekly Press and Referee shows that during the season Pacing Clubs held 233 days racing (many clubs necessarily race the same day); added money, £89,569 ; totalisator investments, £039,121 ; including trotting fixtures read 334 days racing, £104,420 added money, and £712,218 was the total put through the machine.
