A SEVERE SNOWSTORM.
Some idea o£ the severity of the recent snowstorm in Central Otago may be gathered from the following extract which tho Dunedin Star lias been permitted to make from a letter received from Macetown : —' On Saturday afternoon (May 25th) it started to rain in torrents, and about midnight it turned to snow, and by nine o'clock en Sunday morning there were six fc jt of snow and in some places 10 feet and 12 feet. Such a fall has not been known for more than thirty years. On Sunday morning a big slip of snow came from up the bill on to our house, shifting it forward a lor.g way, thus making the doors so that they couhi not bo used. We had then to clear out, and it was snowing heavily, and you can imagine tho snow as high as my h-'shand—say. 5 feet 4 inches—'and wo had just to tumble down tho hill—.3oo feet—and wade down the creek to get into safety. One house was completely etove, and a house in the gully was tipped bodily upside down and into the creek, and smashed to atums. Ibere are a few tracks made now, and the snow is in walls each side.'
