THE HOT LAKES CHRONICLE AND Tourists' Journal. "This fact I will, chronicle." WEDNESDAY, MAY 15, 1895.
Jilt Andrew H. Waddell, who is now in tlio Urewora country on a prospecting expedition, has, according to a telegram in tbe Herald, " discovered a well-defined reef between Ivuotoki and Galatea, in good sandstone country." This is a consummation most devoutly to lie wished as it opens up future possibilities, as far as this town und district are concerned, of the nio?L dazzling description. But a well do. fined reef, and a gold-hearing quartz lode are very different things, and before too ecstatic visions are allowed to overpower one's eyes it will be as well to wait for the Government assay of the stuff which is stated to have been sent for that purpose. Still, the existenco of payable reefs in the Urnwera country is extremely likely, for Mr G. M. Creagh, who has had considerable experience in that locality, lias expressed himself as very confi dent of the fact. Mr Waddell, too, the prospector in question, has much practical mining experience having been until recently employed at the Grand Junction Mine, Waihi, where ho had charge of the diamond drill for Mr J. W. Walker. manager. On tho ground itself only the most rudo tests co uld be applied and stone on which tho merest speekof gold is undiscerni* hie may under assay prove rich iu tho precious metal. But even stone of this description presents indications to the practised miner that justify him in subjecting specimens to a mora crucial test. This is tbe course which Mr \Y iiddo'il has followed iu submit' ting samples of the quartz to Government assay and the result will be awaited with considerable interest.
